Operated under the same business but under two separate classes, the Plant Shop and the Flower Center are flourishing. Plant Shop is an Independent Garden Center (IGC) which retails house plants, bedding plants, potted herbs, and potted trees. The Plant Shop operates under the HORT 297R class called Practicum. The class is broken up into departments similar to a business, with the students taking care of the various ins and outs. The Plant Shop has several retail locations. The main location being in the Benson Greenhouses RM275. Students also set up a booth in the MC every Friday from 8:30am-4:30pm. When the farmers markets open in the Spring the students also attend both the Rexburg and Idaho Falls markets.
The Flower Center is located in Benson RM147 and is operated under the HORT 287R class. Students are required to sign up for two hours a week outside of class to man the center. Half their time is devoted to doing activities such as processing flowers, sterilizing buckets, and organizing supplies. The rest of their time is used to practice design principles and make arrangements for customers. The Flower Center’s operational hours are from 3pm-6pm, Monday thru Friday. If you have any questions about these businesses call Sister Arnold (our Dept. secretary) at 496-4581 or come down to the Benson Building to check them out in person. Our students and employees would love to answer any question you might have! To stay up to date on the activities and events with these businesses like us on our Facebook page.
Our aim for the Department of Horticulture at Brigham Young University-Idaho is to nurture understanding of both the art and science of Horticulture. Students learn experimentally in the classroom, laboratory, greenhouse, and ten acre Thomas E. Ricks demonstration garden as they pursue an Associates or Bachelors Degree. Using the medium of plants, students develop habits of hard work, enlightened minds, and healthy living that assist in gainful employment opportunitues.
