Iseli Nursery is located in Boring, OR just 20 minutes east of Portland in the Willamette Valley. The Nursery's location is a huge key in their success as a Dwarf Conifer grower. They receive free water from the city of Sandy that is drained into large ponds and the Nursery is also located on a main shipping line for freighters. Chris Wright a senior studying Production Horticulture has just completed his internship at Iseli Nursery. He stayed at the intern house on the edge of the nursery property. There are 8 divisions in the company and every two weeks the interns move in rotation to a new division. Chris’s favorite task in the nursery was taking inventory on the entire 400 acre nursery. Chris worked from 7 am-4:30 pm Monday through Friday. Hands-on experience is what Chris feels he gained most from his internship; he also learned how to “properly” stake a maple, “Those 1 gallons can be very frustrating.” When he wasn't working, Chris and his fellow interns explored places like the International Rose Test Garden, Rose Festival, Portland and all of its cuisine choices, and Multnomah Falls. His advice for anybody doing an internship is “Be prepared to work hard and learn as much as you can from the people you work with […] be social and stay positive.”
Our aim for the Department of Horticulture at Brigham Young University-Idaho is to nurture understanding of both the art and science of Horticulture. Students learn experimentally in the classroom, laboratory, greenhouse, and ten acre Thomas E. Ricks demonstration garden as they pursue an Associates or Bachelors Degree. Using the medium of plants, students develop habits of hard work, enlightened minds, and healthy living that assist in gainful employment opportunitues.
