2012 INLA Field Trip 02/08/2012
To kick off the winter 2012 semester, Brother Toll’s Nursery Managementclass took a trip to Boise, ID to attend the Idaho Nursery and Landscaping Association (INLA) expo. This event is a great way to network with and see the different businesses around the country that are making waves in the Horticulture industry. The trip lasted three days and was filled with classes and seminars that were taught by leading national businesses. The students were taught about current topics that are pertinent to the Horticulture industry and various other subjects. The students were also able to attend the INLA Horticulture Trade Show and saw booths run by dozens of companies that provide materials and services for the Horticulture industry. The students had the opportunity to run a booth for the BYUI Horticulture Department. There are several scholarships that are offered through the INLA. Out of the four scholarships awarded, our students came home with three of them! The scholarships were $750 each and were given to Micah Woods, Ashley Barkow, and Ismael Ruelas. Bryan Randall also won an award in a plant identification contest. His prize was a brand new Kindle. The trip was fun for all who went and we are now looking forward for next year’s trip! Stephanie Petersen was the recipient of the Garden Writers Association Scholarship! The Garden Writers Association is an organization of over 1,800 highly respected professionals in the gardening industry that communicate to the public about horticulture, gardening, and the environment. They offer scholarships to students majoring in Horticulture to develop skills and further their education to a career in home gardening media communications. Each application must be accompanied by a supporting letter from the student's major professor. Each student must also submit at least 2 written compositions or photographs demonstrating their interest in garden communication and/or garden photography. Scholarships are given annually and vary in number (2-6) and amount ($250-$2000). Stephanie learned about this scholarship from Brother Nelson. She submitted her two essays to the foundation but she also included a poem, so she could show that she could do something other than essays. Congratulations to Stephanie! We also had a handful of students receive the PLANET Academic Excellence Foundation Scholarship this year. We'd like to extend a congratulations to Micah Woods, Ben Johnson, Adam Sink, Kyle Steadman, Matt Rich, Chris Reed, Lanae Ricks, Vallie Pond, and Andrea Hansen. Together, these students received a combined amount of $10,500 in scholarship money! Well done guys! And good luck with PLANET this week! There are scholarship opportunities everywhere! If you're looking for money for school, talk to the financial aid office, teachers, and even other students! Scholarships are also posted under the scholarship tab above. Kristie received the Garden Writers Association Scholarship. It is award for people studying Horticulture with an interest in journalism/English and the other way around. Kristie found the scholarship on the department's website and filled out the online application , submitted two articles (designed and professionaly printed), a letter of recommendation, short essays about herself, and a signature from Brother Toll. She submitted two different articles to the Association for consideration. A copy of one of the articles can be found here. Kristie was given $1000 for this semester! If you would like to contact Kristie for more information, her email is edd06001@byui.edu. Tim Stevenson found out about the Idaho Nursery & Landscape Association scholarship last year on the Horticulture blog. He applied for the scholarship then, but didn't receive it. He put a reminder on the calender in his phone to apply again this year and it definitely paid off. One thing he did that really made a difference was he actually went to Ann Bates (the INLA director in Idaho Falls) and hand delivered it. This was good because she got to meet him in person. Tim received $750! Congrats Tim! If you have questions for Tim, you can email him at ste04045@byui.edu. |
